Given that it's been nearly a year since I've left Japan, it's natural that I'd reach a nonJapan related story. To link it, though, I've decided to at least make the title in Japanese. I really should have blogged by return to theatre, but since I haven't I'll just reflect on this afternoon before the final performance.

I have become more convinced than ever that the desire to do pastries was from me frightening myself away from theatre. Now that I've come to my senses (or perhaps lost them all over again) I can't imagine myself not doing theatre in some capacity. And this revelation comes from the opportunity to do R&G'r'D. Certainly the whole community theatre aspect has not been without its headaches (Headache is a fun word to spell. I discovered this while doing dictation to my classes in Japan where I'd have to say the word and spell it. Try it: H-E-A-D-A-C-H-E. It makes my tongue happy to spell it aloud.): a short rehearsal period has left me never feeling fully comfortable with the show despite all reports to the contrary from satisfied audiences, and the community theatre aspect leads most people to treat the script with not nearly the amount of respect it deserves. Perhaps I expect too much from the community theatre crowd. I realize it's fun, but even in a casual setting, I can't help but feel a sense of urgency about the task of performance.

But boy howdy, has it been great fun. People always talk about Stoppard and clever wordplay, so I feel trite by mentioning it, but just like spelling headache, I love saying his words. A well-said monologue has given me similar joy to singing a song. Fast-paced dialogues have had the same ring to them as a well-sung duet. I will miss it.

One thing that's been exciting about this show is a realization that I made just last night. When I first read Rosencrantz and Guildenstern some 6 or 7 years ago, I became frightened. My reaction while reading it was different than any other play I had read at that time. Any other play I could hear in my mind immediately. I knew precisely how I would say the lines if I were playing any of those characters. Or at least I knew how I'd want to say them (desired outcome and results can too often not line up as well as we'd like.). But when I read R&G'r'D, I had no clue how to say anything. Line readings completely evaded me. I'm not sure what it was, but I knew that I would completely over my depth if I tried to perform it. Fortunately, I was never called upon to do so. Suddenly, 7 years later, I audition for it and everything fits. I can't imagine what changed, but I know that I've read the script and it's making perfect sense to me where it didn't before. I suppose some sort of growth has happened while I wasn't paying attention. It makes me excited for what else I can learn.

For one thing, working on R&G has involved more mental stimulation than I've become accustomed to for a long time. I'll have to make sure I don't lose that too quickly.
